Overview

What an ADHD assessment is (and what it is not)

An assessment is a structured clinical process that evaluates symptoms, functional impact, developmental history, and alternative explanations. It is not an online quiz and it is not a brief screening appointment.

People often arrive with long-standing concerns: persistent inattention, disorganization, procrastination, emotional dysregulation, or inconsistent performance at school or work. An ADHD assessment clarifies whether ADHD is the best explanation—and what should happen next.

For many clients, the practical goal is documentation: a written report supporting accommodations or planning (school, workplace, exams, or other settings). For others, it is clinical clarity and a plan to address the specific difficulties that are present.

Adults

ADHD can present as underperformance, chronic overwhelm, inconsistent follow-through, or executive function challenges. Adults may also have co-occurring anxiety, mood, or sleep issues—which must be assessed carefully.

Children & Teens

In children, assessment focuses on developmental history, learning profile, school functioning, and contextual factors. Recommendations often include school-facing strategies and, where appropriate, documentation for accommodations.

Process

A structured approach, with clear deliverables

Exact steps can vary by age and presentation, but the process below reflects the core structure.

1) Intake & History

We start with the referral question, current concerns, and relevant background. This includes symptom history and functional impact.

2) Assessment Measures

Standardized measures and clinical tools are selected based on your situation (adult vs child, context, and complexity).

3) Integration & Interpretation

Findings are interpreted in context, considering alternative explanations and co-occurring concerns where relevant.

4) Report & Feedback

You receive a written report and an explanation of findings, with practical recommendations and next steps.

Deliverables

What you receive

We focus on usefulness: clarity, documentation, and practical recommendations.

Comprehensive written report

Clear summary of presenting concerns, assessment approach, findings, and clinical rationale.

Recommendations that are specific

Practical strategies tailored to the identified difficulties and context (school, work, home).

Documentation support

Where appropriate, documentation relevant to accommodations and planning (based on findings and scope).

Feedback session

A structured explanation of results and an opportunity to clarify questions and next steps.

Careful differential thinking

Not every attention concern is ADHD. We consider common alternatives and co-occurring factors as part of interpretation.

Clear next steps

You leave with a plan—what to do now, and what to monitor over time.

FAQ

Common questions

These are high-frequency questions from adults, parents, and referring professionals.

How is an assessment different from an online test?

Online tests are typically screening tools. A clinical assessment integrates structured history, symptom patterns, functional impact, and clinically appropriate measures, then produces a documented interpretation and recommendations.

Do you assess both adults and children?

Yes. The approach differs by age and context. Children’s assessments often include school functioning and developmental factors; adults’ assessments focus on life history, executive functioning, and day-to-day impact.

Is this available across Ontario?

We serve clients in Ontario. Depending on your situation, some components may be completed virtually and/or in person.

What if it is not ADHD?

That outcome is still valuable. The goal is a defensible clinical answer and a practical plan. If another explanation better fits, recommendations focus on addressing the identified issues.

What is the next step if I want to proceed?

The simplest next step is to submit a consultation request. We will confirm fit, explain logistics, and outline the process before you commit.

Ready for next steps?

If you are unsure which page applies, submit a consultation request and we will route you to the appropriate assessment pathway.
